Cultural Etiquette for Accommodation in Japan



When staying in Japan, it’s important to observe local customs and etiquette, especially in traditional inns such as ryokan(日本和室旅館) or minshuku(日式民宿) or shared accommodations. Here are key points to keep in mind:


  • General Etiquette (Hotels & Ryokan)

  1. Keep Quiet:
    Japanese culture values peace and quiet. Keep your voice down in hallways and rooms, and avoid loud behavior.

  2. Check-in/Check-out Punctually:
    Punctuality is important in Japan. Respect the designated times.

  3. Be Polite to Staff:
    Show courtesy to hotel staff.


  • Specific Etiquette for Traditional Japanese Inns

  1. Remove Shoes Before Entering:
    Always take off your shoes before entering your room, especially if it has tatami (straw mats). Slippers are usually provided at the entrance.

  2. Slipper Etiquette:
    Toilet slippers are provided separately. Change into them when entering the bathroom and switch back afterward.

  3. Proper Way to Wear Yukata (Japanese Robe):
    If provided a yukata, wrap the left side over the right. (Right over left is for dressing the deceased.)

  4. Public Bathing (Onsen or Communal Bath) Rules:

    • Wash and rinse your body thoroughly before entering the bath.

    • Do not bring towels into the bathwater.

    • No swimming or splashing.

    • Tattoos may be restricted in some baths(check in advance).


  • Etiquette for Guesthouses,  Airbnb

  1. Noise Control:
    Many guesthouses are in residential areas. Keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing neighbors.

  2. Garbage Separation:
    Japan has strict waste separation rules. Follow instructions for sorting burnables.

  3. Follow Instructions for Facilities:
    Pay attention to the host’s instructions for using appliances like bathrooms, kitchens, or washing machines.
